QandA
Questions on Oil massage

Will my body feel greasy after an oil massage session?
Your massager will be careful to remove all the oil applied to your skin using steamed towels. You are also welcome to use our shower facility after the session.

What kinds of oils do you use?
Please refer to the page on massage oils for the complete list.

Is oil massage harmful to pregnant women?
Gentle massage using only natural vegetable oils should have no adverse effect on the health of a woman in any stage of pregnancy. When treating a woman well advanced in her pregnancy, however, we avoid having her lie face-down lest the child in her womb be subjected to potentially dangerous pressure.

Do you have any male massagers for your in-home massage service?
All our in-home massagers are women, but Kaz Shizawa, the director, is also available for the service upon request (refer to the page on our acupuncture services).

What is your cancellation policy?
Any cancellation received less than one hour before the appointment is subject to a 30% cancellation fee. This does not apply to appointment changes, however.

Questions on Acupuncture

How does acupuncture work?
Major effectiveness: promotion of health and well being
prevention of illness
treatment of various medical conditions
digestive disorders
respiratory disorders
neurological and muscular disorders
urinary, menstrual, and reproductive problems

Eastern medicine seeks to support and maintain a person's total well-being.
The human body is inherently endowed with a homeostatic mechanism to help it stay healthy. Any disorder, intrinsic or extrinsic, will be addressed by the body's natural healing power, in a process that ideally leads to the complete restoration of health. There are cases, however, when the severity of the problem exceeds the body's self-healing capacity, with the result that the patient cannot expect any major recovery to take place while he or she is staying in bed.
Acupuncture is a form of medical intervention that seeks to accelerate the natural recovery process by boosting the body's innate healing abilities. It also helps keep neural and hormonal systems from getting out of balance while improving blood circulation, thereby enhancing immunity and resistance to diseases.
The human body can be likened to an electrical circuit, whose fuses correspond to acupoints. In acupuncture treatment, the practitioner replaces blown fuses with new ones to get electricity flowing again, so to speak, restoring and revitalizing body functions and relieving symptoms.
With a patient suffering lower back pain or shoulder stiffness, for example, the acupuncturist uses needling stimulation to trigger the production and release of endorphins, the body's natural pain-relieving hormones, facilitate blood circulation, and promote excretion of uric acid, one of the body's waste products responsible for muscle pain, achieving the relief of nerve pressure and the elimination of the painful symptom.

What are the needles like? Do they hurt?

The length and thickness of the needles used in treatment are determined based on the nature of the patient's symptom and the location of the body to be treated. In most cases, however, we use two-inch-long stainless needles (we also have silver and gold needles, which we may use when appropriate or when requested by patients). The idea of having metal objects stick into your body may seem scary, but the needles used in acupuncture are of extremely thin types that can hardly cause any pain. Rather, patients often feel a pleasant, refreshing sensation when a needle has been inserted into an acupoint on their bodies.
On the other hand, there are cases when a patient feels mild fatigue or dullness/heaviness after a treatment. Called "Mengen" in Eastern medicine, this is a temporary state of discomfort that arises in reaction to acupuncture needling and passes before the body begins to regain full health.
You may choose the thickness of the needles to be used for your treatment. Please tell your therapist if you have any preferences.

How many treatments do I require, and how often?
Treatment needs vary with each individual, but we have had to advise most of our patients to come back three to five times after the first session. We also recommend receiving regular acupuncture treatments as a preventive health care strategy even after symptoms have been relieved.

Can acupuncture transmit infectious diseases?
No, because all the needles are disposed of after use. Equipment such as petri dishes for needles is sterilized in a high pressure steam sterilization device. In our clinic, which is approved by Department of Public Health, these procedures are conducted responsibly by nationally certified practitioners.

Instructions you should follow during and after treatment

1) Acupuncture treatment essentially aims to improve body's self-healing capacity.
So if you are extremely nervous and scared, then it could weaken the effectiveness of the treatment. Please relax, and let yourself experience the healing benefits of acupuncture. However even if you are nervous, in 20 minutes, you'll find your entire body begins to relax.

2) Sometimes needles are placed you for 5 to 20 minutes as a part of treatment.
If the needle is causing pain or you feel sick during this period, please let us know immediately.
As soon as the needle is taken out, it will be fixed.

3) After acupuncture treatment, you might feel faint or tired, especially after the first one. This is caused by having your entire muscle relaxed. These symptoms will disappear after having a short sleep.

4) In rare cases, there may be transient worsening of symptoms. This is called "Mengen" in Eastern medicine. If this occurs it is followed by significant improvement. These changes are normal and indicate that your body is responding to treatment.

5) There is no special instructions after treatment, however we recommend that you have an early night since it is often the case that you feel sleepy.

Other benefits of acupuncture

1) Cosmetic benefit
Acupuncture promotes a waste product removal out of your body by accelerating metabolism, which helps you maintain younger appearance. A swollen face will be dramatically improved in the next day of treatment. Your face will be totally different from pre-treatment.

2) Reduction of alcohol consumption:
Improvement of metabolism can also reduce your stress level, so that you can be satisfied with a smaller amount of alcohol after treatment.

3) Increase of awareness of your own body:
You'll be more aware of changes in your body that you haven't noticed before.
You'll be able to feel the signs your body tells you.
